Evelyn Alma Hruby

Evelyn Alma Hruby, 95, Bismarck, formerly of Wilton, ND, died September 19, 2015, at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wilton with Rev. Frank Schuster officiating. Burial will be held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Eastgate Funeral Service and will continue on Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church. Evelyn was born on July 7, 1920, in Goodrich, ND, the daughter of Leonard and Rose Mertz. She was raised and attended school in the Goodrich area. As a young woman, she worked in Alexandria, MN, and then moved to Wilton, ND, where she met Joseph Hruby. They were married in 1944 at St. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Wilton. Early in their marriage, they lived in Bismarck, West Fargo, Wilton, and Washburn. They then settled in Underwood, ND, for thirteen years until 1962 when they moved back to Wilton where they owned and operated Hruby's Skelly (Highway 83) for thirteen years. During that time, Evelyn also worked at the Wilton Café, Wilton Senior Center, and Wilton Public School. Evelyn was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sacred Heart Women, Moose Lodge, and Fraternal Order of the Eagles in Bismarck. She enjoyed sewing, playing cards, gardening, dancing, traveling, and spending time with her family. Evelyn is survived by three daughters, Lorraine (Pete) Stollenwerk of Fargo, ND, JoAnn (Alan) Hausauer of Bismarck, and Susan Kuntz of Lemoore, CA; one son, Lonnie (Hilary Austin) of Mandan; eight grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Deckert of Arena, ND; and two brothers, LeRoy (Margaret) Mertz of Bismarck and Jim (Lois) Mertz of Wilton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe; one son-in-law, Daniel Kuntz; and three sisters, Viola Martin, Ella Bucholtz, and Jeanette Elichuck.
