There, he met the love of his life, Colleen, and in 1968, Vance earned his Bachelor's Degree in education. He got his first teaching job in Schullsburg, WI. Teaching immediately brought him the joy in life he hoped it would. Life got even better the next summer. On June 7, 1969, Ms. Colleen Harrington walked into a church in Rockford, IL. They walked out arm in arm, smiles as big as their love, forever to be Mr. and Mrs. Vance and Colleen Rekdal. They moved to Linton, ND, where he taught and they welcomed their son, Scott, in 1971. They were off to Grand Forks once again, just long enough for Vance to earn his Master's Degree in Counseling. They moved to Stephen, MN. In 1975, their daughter, Stephanie joined the family. In 1982, the family made their home in Steele, ND. Vance worked as the guidance counselor for Steele-Dawson High School, along with high schools in several surrounding communities. He retired in 2011. Vance treasured his years as a guidance counselor and had a great passion for enriching the lives of his students. He loved baseball and enjoyed cheering for the Twins and the Dodgers. He loved golf and playing cribbage with his friends.
