Howard was born December 28, 1925, to Haakon and Berit (Helgamo) Howe. Howard's parents were both Norwegian immigrants who settled in Minot, ND, where Howard and his sister, Ina Ruth (Tootsie), were born and raised. Howard was very proud of his Norwegian heritage. Upon his graduation from Minot High School, Howard served his country by enlisting in the US Navy. Howard worked the Navy's flight line where his lifelong love of flying and aviation began.
After his discharge in 1945 Howard attended Minot State College but opted to finish his studies at NDAC (NDSU) where he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering. It was during this time he met his wife of 66 years, Beverly (Forbes) who was a fellow "AC" student. After residing in Fargo for 2 years, Howard, Beverly and their young son, Scott, relocated to Mandan where Howard found employment with Mandan Sheet Metal Works. He stayed with the company eventually becoming a partner then full owner until he sold his company and retired in 1991. It was during this time Howard followed his dream to become a pilot obtaining his private license and owning his own plane(s) that allowed him to travel for business as well as to keep up with the sports activities of his children who were active in baseball, basketball, football and track. It also made it a lot easier to get to Minneapolis to take in Twins baseball games. Howard served as the head of the Mandan Airport Authority and under his guidance the Mandan Airport went through major changes and improvements making it a top facility in the state. He and his entire family were very proud of the work that he accomplished at the airport while representing the city of Mandan. Airplanes were not his only fascination as a wealth of different vehicles graced the family's garages from Chrysler Imperials and Lincoln Town Cars to Corvettes, Porsches, Mercedes-Benz, Mustangs, Volkswagen Beetles and a Ford Model A. His home north of Mandan afforded him the opportunity to convert a former stable into a work shop complete with a pit so he could tinker on his cars as well as the other odd vehicles he acquired along the way. It was a given when you stopped by the house that Dad was out in his shop.
Howard was a huge fan of Big Band music and not only enjoyed listening but also playing his cornet at community events as a member of the Mandan Elks Band.
Howard is survived by his wife, Beverly; son, Scott (Kathy), daughters, Connie Whittington and Hildy (Kevin) Oberlander all of Bismarck; his grandchildren Wendy (Jake) Baukol, Kelly (Emmy) Howe, Nicholas (Alexis), Quinn and Tyne Oberlander; great-grandchildren Callie and Abby Baukol, Landon and Hayden Howe; niece Holly (Larry) Eidsness; and nephew Ron (Ann) Forsberg.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his much loved little sister, Ina Ruth Forsberg, his grandson Christopher Howe;son-in-law, Reece Whittington; and niece, Randi Forsberg Rice.
Howard's family would like to thank the staff at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center for all of the care and kindness shown to Howard while he was there.
Howard and Beverly loved animals and there was always an assortment of extremely spoiled dogs in the Howe household. Because of this love of animals the family asks that in lieu of flowers you will consider memorials made in Howard's honor to the Central Dakota Humane Society in Mandan and/or the Dakota Zoo of Bismarck. - See more at: http://www.eastgatefuneral.com/obituary/Howard-E-Howe/Bismarck-ND/1547620#sthash.RSJ2Hg3L.dpuf
