Millicent "Mickey" Haunz was a beautiful woman inside and out. Her beauty was often likened to Marilyn Monroe. Her loving and peaceful nature was a life blessing amidst the tornado of activity surrounding her husband, Dr. Edgar A. Haunz MD. Doctor Haunz was well known world-wide for his research in diabetes. He was a medical doctor, one of the original founders of the Grand Forks Clinic, and started "Camp Sioux", a summer camp in Turtle River State Park for children with Diabetes. Mickey dedicated her life to her family, her husband and his work. She worked to keep him healthy and maintain a calm family life.
Millicent Haunz, known as a young girl as "Millie", was born in McVille, North Dakota, July 17, 1926. She was daughter to Dr. Perry C. Arnold and Martha Ousdahl Arnold. Both her parents were immigrants from Kristiansand, Norway and her father was the only dentist in McVille North Dakota until his retirement in the late 50's. "Millie" loved her life growing up in McVille with her sisters, Norma Arnold, Tess "Tessie" Arnold Davis, Winifred "Winnie" Arnold Porter and Marilyn "Lynn" Arnold Mahoney. She will now join her beloved parents, aforementioned sisters, brother Perry and sister Martha.
"Mickey", as Millicent was known in Grand Forks, was active in her community, PEO and children's school. She enjoyed much her summers with her husband on Lake of the Woods, Canada. Mickey and Edgar traveled extensively, during Dr. Haunz's Diabetes research and medical career, spending time in Europe, Canada and United States. As a younger couple they were constantly "on the go", entertaining in their home and enjoying their many friends at "the lake" and in Grand Forks. After her husband, Edgar, passed away in 1986, she continued to enjoy traveling to exotic lands with her friends.
Mickey had two children, Barbara Haunz Bronken (husband Peter Bronken), Bozeman, Montana and William Edgar Arnold Haunz (wife Nancy Bradbury Haunz), Bismarck, North Dakota. Mickey has 6 beautiful grandchildren. Lisa Marie Centeno-Haunz (Omar Centeno-Haunz), Katie Mae Haunz, Amy Lynn Haunz, Derek Alexander Haunz Bronken (Amber Stringer Bronken), Casey Matthew Haunz Bronken. Her grandson Adam Bjorn Haunz Bronken preceded her in death in 1997. She has 2 great grandchildren, Kate Jessica Bronken and Lex William Centeno-Haunz.
During her long illness she remained strong of heart. Mickey will be greatly missed by all of us who loved her and had the opportunity to call her "Mom", "Nanny" and friend. As her favorite artist, Nat King Cole would have crooned: Millicent, "Millie", "Mickey" is and will be "Unforgettable, that's what you are, Unforgettable, though near or far".
