Walter O. Albrecht, 87, Mandan, passed away on October 28, 2015, at Sanford Health in Bismarck.
A memorial service will be held on Monday at 11:00 AM at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, with Rev. Joel Samuelson officiating. Walter’s family will be greeting guests one hour prior to the service. Burial will be held at 2:00 PM at the ND Veterans Cemetery.
Walter was born on February 17, 1928, in Logan County, Napoleon, ND, to Jacob and Pauline (Hagel) Albrecht. He grew up on a farm south of Dawson and later east of Steele. He attended Steele High School, graduating with a state high school equivalency certificate in 1973.
He entered Platoon 416 US Marine Corps in San Diego, CA, in 1951 and was discharged on November 13, 1959. He then went to work at the State Industrial School in Mandan now known as ND State Correctional Center where he spent the next 40 years of his working career as a boy’s supervisor plus other duties while employed there.
Walter loved sports including baseball, football, and basketball – but his passion was golf. He was an avid golfer and belonged to Mandan Municipal Golf Course and Prairie West Golf Course.
He was a member of the Elks, Mandan American Legion where he was very active in the Junior Legion Baseball Program, and Mandan Eagles.
Walter is survived by his sister, Ramona Wanner; his brother, Ray Albrecht, both of Bismarck; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers; three sisters; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers or memorials, donations may be made to the ND Veterans Cemetery, the Mandan American Legion Baseball Program, or the Elks at Camp Grassick.
