Arthur Schaible

June 24, 1920 — November 1, 2015

Arthur “Art” Schaible, 95, Bismarck, formerly of Mott, died November 1, 2015, at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck. Services will be held at 11:00 am MT Saturday, November 7, at Zoar Congregational Church, Mott, with Rev. Corey Warner officiating. Burial will be at Sunny Slope Cemetery, Mott. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Art Schaible, born June 24, 1920, in Grant County, North Dakota, was the eighth of seventeen children born to Henry and Emelia Schaible. In 1924 his family moved to a farm six miles southwest of Mott where he spent his childhood days. He attended school in Mott until 1937 when he joined the CCC’s fighting forest fires in California. After returning home, he finished high school graduating in 1939. After joining the CCC’s again, he spent time in Miles City, Montana until drafted into the Army in April, 1941. Art served as a forward observer for the headquarters battery of the 151st Field Artillery Battalion, 34th “Red Bull” Infantry Division and was credited with 517 combat days while serving in North Africa and Italy. After being discharged in July 1945, Art returned to Fargo to attend Business College when he met Eleanor Anderson. Married June 22, 1946, Art and Eleanor moved to Mott and began farming and raising a family of five children. Farming and raising his family occupied his time until retiring from farming in 1977. Art then became involved in the buying and selling of oil and gas mineral interests and in the pursuit of walleye. Art and Eleanor spent many hours fishing on Lake Sakakawea primarily out of the New Town Marina. He used to say that all the seagulls followed his boat with the red cooler strapped to the back. After many wonderful years spent in semi-retirement, (he was always investing in the markets and managing his farm interests), Art’s health caused him to reluctantly move to Bismarck where he and Eleanor lived in assisted living facilities. He moved into the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in January, 2013 after Eleanor passed away in March the year before. Grateful to have shared his life and honored by his years of military service are his daughter Sandy (Gary Evans) of Mesa, Arizona; his sons Clayton (Bev) and Randy (Jane) both of Bismarck, and Jerry (Jacky) of Mott; twelve grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his wife Eleanor; daughter Shirley Walstad; his parents; and his sixteen siblings.
