Gualberto C. Gokim, Jr., M.D., 79, Bismarck, passed away December 20, 2015, at Sanford Health with his wife and daughter at his side.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday December 31, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, 520 Raymond St., Bismarck, with Rev. Monsignor Thomas J. Richter presiding. Rev. Daniel Maloney, OSB will concelebrate with Deacon Doug Krebs assisting. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bismarck.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, December 30, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck. A Rosary/Vigil will begin at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Maloney presiding. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the church service.
“Bert” was born February 7, 1936, in Manila, Philippines, to Gualberto Sr. and Feliciana (Coson) Gokim. He attended San Beda College, then the University of Santo Tomas, College of Medicine, graduating in 1960. He passed his ECFMG examination, but opted to be a resident physician at Jose R. Reyes Memorial Hospital, Manila, Philippines, before coming to the US. Once moving to the US, he completed an additional internship at St. Joseph Hospital in Baltimore, MD. He then completed his fellowships in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at the Lahey Clinic, Boston, MA.
Bert married Rizalina “Lina” Nañagas, July 10, 1965, Manila, Philippines. They had one daughter, Maria. They moved to Bismarck, ND, in 1973 where Bert became one of the first gastroenterologists with the Quain & Ramstad Clinic (Q&R Clinic). In the early years of his practice, he provided GI services to both Bismarck Hospital and St. Alexius Hospital, as well as the surrounding areas. His motto became, “Have scope will travel.” Bert retired in 2006 after 33 years of medical practice in Bismarck.
Bert is survived by his wife, Lina, and ‘unica iha’ Maria. He is also survived by his brother, Manuel (Allen); his sisters, Gloria Tengco, Milagros (Manuel) Tagle, Felicidad (Lope) Gayla, and Loreto (George) Clemente; sisters-in-law, Aida and Irene; brother-in-law, Ernie de los Reyes; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Cesar and Gonzalo; sister, Lily de los Reyes; and brother-in-law, Laurentino R. Tengco.
