Leo Frieze, 71, Bismarck, died February 16, 2016, at CHI St. Alexius Health, Bismarck.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am Saturday, February 20, at Church of St. Anne, 1321 Braman Avenue, Bismarck, with Rev. Wayne Sattler officiating.
Burial will be held at 11:00 am Monday, February 22, at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Visitation will be held from 5:00pm to 9:00pm Friday, February 19, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, where a vigil/rosary service will begin at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Leo Michael Frieze was born June 7, 1944, in Mott, ND, the son of John and Lena (Basting) Frieze. He graduated from Mott High School in 1963. He then moved to Spokane Washington to study aircraft mechanics, but was subsequently drafted into the US Army. He served in the 725th Battalion “Tropic Lightning” in Hawaii and then followed by a tour in Vietnam. While serving, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Expert Badge Rifle, and Good Conduct Medal. Following his honorable discharge from the military, Leo enrolled in the North Dakota State School of Science electrical program where he graduated in 1968 with his Associates Degree. He then moved to Bismarck, ND where he worked as a journeyman electrician for IBEW Local 714. Leo married Roberta Friedt on June 6, 1970, at St. Vincent’s Catholic Church in Mott, ND.
Leo loved the outdoors enjoying hunting, fishing, camping, boating, and gardening. He became an excellent cook using his produce to make pickles, salsa, and found many uses for apples from a tree he planted years earlier. He enjoyed making sausage and jerky with his sons after any good hunting harvest. He also made the best caramel rolls which were often requested by his grandchildren.
Leo is survived by his wife, Roberta “Bobbie”, Bismarck; his three sons, Aaron (Sherri), Mandan and their sons Trae and Tayten; Jason (Melissa), Fremont NE and their daughter Sydney and son Joshua; and Steven (Kellie), Fremont, NE. His brothers, John (Arlyce); Joe (Darlene); and Henry Frieze. His sisters, Lucille (Stan) Rice; Katherine (Norm) Hornberger; and Venita Wahlers.
He was preceded in death by his parents John and Lena Frieze; and his sisters Eva, Alice Jung, Ann Ehli, Margaret Emter, and Pauline.
