Lance was born June 24, 1955, in Minot, North Dakota, to Herman (Bud) and Joyce Tryhus. Lance attended South Prairie School, Minot, ND graduating from Minot High School in 1973.
Lance worked for Neshem Grain Farms and Neshem Harvesters in Berthold for more than 13 years. In 1986 Lance went to work for Dakota Fence Company in Minot and transferred to Bismarck in 1987. In 1990 he began working for the Bismarck Public Schools as a custodian at Century High School until poor health required him to retire in 2014. Lance enjoyed working with the students and the teachers. He went out of his way to help students and teachers whether it was decorating for prom, unlocking the school for practices, or unlocking classrooms for teachers. He is fondly remembered by students and staff for making backwards half-court basketball shots. Often when Lance was at a restaurant or a store, whether in Bismarck or out of town, a former student from Century High School would stop and say “Hi Lance, do you remember me?” Lance didn’t always remember their names but he remembered their faces.
Lance married Cheryl Miller on August 25, 1984, in Bismarck. Two children were born to the marriage, Andrew and Chelsie. Lance enjoyed his Harley Davidson motorcycles – customizing them to show and then to ride. Even building one motorcycle in the kitchen of their mobile home which Cheryl didn’t have a problem with, until he started it up in the house. After Andy and Chelsie came along it was decided to trade the motorcycle for a camper even though Andy and Chelsie enjoyed riding on the motorcycle with Lance. The family enjoyed many years of camping trips to Lake Sakakawea and to Hart Ranch Camping Resort in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Lance volunteered many hours to Boy Scouts of America continuing to volunteer even after Andy earned his Eagle Scout. He thoroughly enjoyed working in the Boy Scout Troop 2 booth at the September Street Fair, and visiting with all of the people who stopped to buy a brat.
Along with camping, Lance enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing golf with Cheryl, Andy and Chelsie until his health no longer allowed him to enjoy these hobbies. But, many memories were made. His final wish was to throw a fishing line in the water. On September 6, 2014, Chelsie, Andy and Nikki took him to the river where he got to throw a line in. He didn’t catch a fish but just being able to enjoy fishing one last time made him very happy.
