Sebastian “Sy” was born on April 3, 1914, the oldest of nine children born to George and Catherine Kuntz. He started working for the Soo Line Railroad when he was fourteen years old. Sy married Magdalena Schweitzer in October of 1935 and they had four children.
Sy entered the US Army in 1943, returned in 1944, and went back to work for the Railroad. They lived in Moffit, ND, where he was the section foreman and retired after 48 years.
Sy had a 3rd grade education and was proud of his 3rd grade diploma. (He joked about that.) But he did well. When he started school he couldn’t speak English, he said he had to learn that the hard way.
Sy loved hunting, fishing, and woodworking. He liked making sausage and headcheese. Most of all, he loved eating it. He liked his steaks very rare, and Lena’s cooking and baking; he just enjoyed food! But most of all, he had a big heart for his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, or any little ones, no matter who they were. He was a stern Dad, but fair. He was always there for his family and friends. He was tough and yet fun.
Sy was preceded in death by his wife, Lena; his parents; his siblings; one son, Raymond; and one grandson, Kent, at three months old.
Sy will be greatly missed by us all. We hope the journey home was very exciting for him, yet peaceful. See ya later Dad!
