Barbara Schmaltz, 91, formerly of Tappen, ND, passed away peacefully at St. Gabriel’s Community, Bismarck ND, with her children at her side.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am Thursday, March 31, at St. Paul Catholic Church, Tappen, with Msgr. Jeffrey Wald and Rev. Jerome Hunkler officiating.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm Tuesday, March 29, at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, and from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm Wednesday, March 30, at Eastgate-Steele Memorial Chapel in Steele, ND, where a prayer service and rosary will begin at 7:00 pm.
Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Burial will be held at Fisher Cemetery, Tappen.
Barbara was born on October 13, 1924 in Napoleon, Logan County, ND, to Anton C and Dorothea (Haegele) Wald, both deceased. On May 20, 1946, Barbara married Adam Schmaltz from Wishek, ND. In October 1947 they purchased a farm six miles north of Tappen, and became members of St. Paul’s Catholic Church.
There were many years put into teaching 4th grade religion school and being a Kidder County 4-H leader of the Busy Beavers 4-H Club. She enjoyed dancing and the neighborhood Whist Card Party Club. Barbara was very dedicated to assist her husband with farming. She did many things such as gardening, cooking, canning fruits and vegetables, making jam, sewing, known for her delicious buns and pickles, helped with fieldwork when necessary, and was a robust partner in the successful dairy farm operation. Her greatest gifts were faith and love for God and love for her family and friends.
Barbara is survived by her children; Catherine and Van Mitzel, Dorothy and Richard Wanner, and Petronia Laine, all of Bismarck, ND; Phyllis and Jewell Mehlhoff, Tuttle; Mary Ann and Dale Wolf, Bethany, OK; and John and Jody Schmaltz, Tappen; her grandchildren, Barb and Brian Williams and Matthew and Brianne Mitzel, children of Catherine and Van Mitzel; Christopher and Theresa Kuhn and Kim and Ken Stenger, Jason and Jessica Wanner, children of Dorothy and Richard Wanner; Paul Laine, Jesse Laine, and Amy and David (DJ) Trudeau, children of Petronia and Mike Laine; Michael and Wanda Mehlhoff, Tanna and Mike Richard, Jeremy and Dusty Mehlhoff, children of Phyllis and Jewell Mehlhoff; Jaci and Will Ivins, and Lisa Wolf, children of Mary Ann and Dale Wolf; Joshua and Jane Schmaltz, Joni and Jerrod Lematta, and Julia and Seth Kendall, children of John and Jody Schmaltz; and 33 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings,: Conrad and Pat Wald, Antigo, WI; Mary Fettig, Napoleon, ND; Idora and Leo Schmidt, and Cyrella Wangler, all of Hazelton, ND; and one sister-in-law,Pauline Wald, Jamestown, ND.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Adam; her son, Elmer; her grandsons, James Kuhn and Lonnie Kuhn; son-in-law, Rodney A Kuhn; three brothers, Joseph Wald, Louis Wald, and Leo B Wald; four brothers-in-law, Dennis Henley, Andrew Wangler, Jon Engelhardt, and Frank Fettig; one sister,Veronica Henley; and two sisters-in-law, Rose Mary Wald and Johanna Wald.
