Francis (also widely known as Kaiser) was born in Hague, ND, on May 16, 1926, to Raymond and Magdalena (Miller) Schall. He grew up working with his father in the Hague hardware store and was a graduate of Hague High School, class of 1943. Shortly after graduation, he joined the Navy. There he served his country in World War II in the Philippines from 1944-1946. On June 13, 1950, he married Mildred Baumgartner in Saint Mary’s Church in Hague. He was a bulk gas salesman for Standard Oil for many years before he and Millie moved to New Hope, MN. There he worked in construction for a bit before settling into a career as a truck driver with Peterson Seed. Francis loved to drive and after his retirement from Peterson Seed, he drove a school bus for several years.
Francis was a man of deep faith and was active for many years at The Church of Saint Raphael’s in Crystal, MN and then at the Church of the Ascension in Bismarck. He was a Knight of Columbus (Hague chapter), member of the Bismarck Elks, and a member of the AMVETS. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather whose family and friends were paramount in his life. His love, laughter (and his stories!) will be missed.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Mildred, son Brian (Gale) Schall of Alexandria, AL, daughter Deborah (James) Tollifson of Maple Grove, MN, grandchildren; Melissa (Matthew Haider) Tollifson of San Diego, their children, Quinn and John “Jack” James, Tiffany (Christopher) Clark of Hokes Bluff, AL, Adam (Cara) Tollifson of Bloomington, MN, their children Lyla and Marco, and Lindsey Tollifson of Rochester, MN; his sisters, Viola (Adam) Buechler of Hague, ND, Bernadette (Earl) Eberle of Oakland, CA, and Patricia (Jerome) Baumgartner of Alexandria, MN. His brother-in-law, Peter (Delilah) Baumgartner of Bismarck, ND and sisters-in-law, Lois Baumgartner of Bismarck, ND, Alvina Baumgartner of Aberdeen, SD, Delores Hennessey of New York City, NY, and Lenora Muehler of Bismarck, ND. Fran was also blessed with many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Francis is preceded in death by his parents, brothers-in-law Victor Baumgartner and Daniel Baumgartner.
In lieu of flowers, memorials will be preferred to the family for AMVETS of Bismarck.
