He attended school in Solen and Elgin where he played basketball and football, graduating from Elgin High School. On May 27, 1961, he married Marjorie Rants in Vista, CA. James was in the military from 1958 to 1966 when he was honorably discharged due to an injury and received a Purple Heart. James worked at the ND State Penitentiary for 35 years, retiring in 2001. James enjoyed fishing, camping, and was an avid reader of western books. He especially enjoyed the time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, when he would spoil them with ice cream and candy, but most of all, his love. James will be greatly remembered for his love of his family. He would always lend a hand where he could and would give great advice when needed. James’ relatives were in town for a much anticipated reunion, which James was looking forward too. When he knew he was not going to be able to make it he extended an invitation to anyone who wanted to come to the hospital to see him, even if it was for a nod or a hand squeeze. James is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marjorie Frederick; his sons, Dwayne (Karre Larson), Douglas, and Kenyon; his daughters, Brenda (Russ) Burley, and Toni (Justin) Hohbein; a special daughter-in-law, Vivian Frederick; his grandchildren, Darren Frederick (Brooke Vollmers), Amber Frederick (Tony Nelson), Amanda Frederick (Jared Bichler), Ashley Frederick (Matthew Bahm), Dylan (Trish) Frederick, Skylor and Alex Otto, Jon (Ashley) Burley, Amber Burley (Aaron Colby), Taylor Kitzan (Jacob Sommerfield), Zack Burley, Kaitlyn and Kaycie Hohbein, and Austin Frederick; his great-grandchildren, Jayden and Landyn Papka, Aysia and Kiara Frederick, Hayley Bruce and Spencer Frederick; and his brothers, John, Joe, and Eddy.
