Born in Mott, oldest of nine, Alice Roozen excelled in her school work, graduating as salutatorian in 1943. She was musical and athletic, part of the Mott Follies dance and tumbling teams. The textbook example of an overachiever, Alice taught herself shorthand and through her high school years worked for various businesses in Mott taking dictation. She also belonged to the Rainbow Girls in Mott.
She married Jacob (Jake) Rueben Fiedler on November 1, 1943, in Sydney, MT. While starting a family, they cared for four of her siblings. They farmed southwest of Mott, ND until 1964, when they moved into town. She logged hundreds of hours for the Ground Observer Corp watching for low flying aircraft during the ‘cold war’. She would later go on to work for the Hettinger County Superintendent of Schools, retiring in 1979. Upon Jake’s death in 1985, Alice moved to Bismarck, ND.
A classic intellectual, Alice was an excellent wordsmith, researching words and their meanings, even while she was at Edgewood Vista and Missouri Slope Care Center. Alice kept detailed diaries in which she made daily entries since the 1940’s. She entered essay contests, winning small prizes she would later donate to others. Her scholarly aptitudes were only superseded by her servant’s heart. With her ability to touch hearts and souls, Alice’s Christian faith would guide her through life. She welcomed all into her home with the gift of hospitality, and she cooked for them the finest local cuisine. Music was also a passion of hers, from polkas and waltzes to modern hits, Alice enjoyed listening to music as well as singing it, belonging to many vocal groups throughout the years.
Alice loved to dance, play cards, swim at the YMCA, and socialize over coffee. The organizations she belonged to were RSVP, where she was volunteer of the week 1989, American Legion (past president), VFW and Bismarck Eagles Auxiliary, Hettinger County Historical Society, Germans from Russia Heritage Society (a charter member), Friends of the Library, The Senior Citizen Singers, the Mott Evangelical Church, Volunteer Caregivers Exchange, Good Neighbors Club, Hettinger County homemakers clubs, and God’s Child. She volunteered for the North Dakota Aging Services, Bismarck Health Fair, March of Dimes, Bismarck Senior Center, Silver Hair Legislature, Mandan-Bismarck Orchestral Association, and Bismarck Chamber of Commerce.
She is survived by four daughters and three sons: Charlotte (Jerry) Phillips, Casper WY, Michael (Portia), Boise ID, Ruth Herron, Boise ID, Melodie Hauck, Lakeside CA, Gerry (Charles) Schaal, Beach ND, Leland (Evelyn), Vinita OK, Leslie, Bismarck ND; daughter-in-law, Joanne (Pat) Fresno Ca; two sisters, Kaye (Ed) Roozen Smaltz, Ocean Springs MS, and Janet (Dennis) Roozen Meyers, Oregon City OR; 3 brothers, Gerald (Carol) Roozen and Harold Roozen, Hawthorne CA, Lee (Marie) Roozen, Los Angeles; 14 grandchildren: David (Christine) Baldwin, Cassandra (Andy)Holman, Crystal Fiedler, Candace (Ben) Garfin, Catherine (Brett) Cook, Eric (Xee)Fiedler, Jennifer (Patrick)Barcellos, Chad Bullinger, Jenean Mistelske, Alicia (Evan) Soares, Amanda (Jesse) Kille, Meagan Schaal, Kendra and Chelsea Fiedler. 18 great-grandchildren, Daniel, KayLyn and Taylor Baldwin, Brooklyn, Logan, McKenzie, Tristan Holman, Madison Bear, Luke Cook, Elijah and Aliyah Fiedler, Andrew and Brandon Barcellos, Nicole, Nathan and Logan Soares, Tiffany and Brittany Mistelske; two great-great-grandchildren, Harmony and Mason Mistelske.
