Elaine Berry Stern, 89, Bismarck, died August 15, 2016, at CHI St. Alexius Health in Bismarck.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 12:00 Noon at Charity Lutheran Church in Bismarck with Rev. Randy Upgren officiating.
Born on August 11, 1927, in Sarles, ND, to Wilbur and Sydna Berry, Elaine lived on the family farm and attended school in Cando. Elaine later moved to Chicago, where she attended elementary school, high school, and business college. With strong family connections to North Dakota, Elaine moved back home to Grand Forks in 1948.
In 1960, Elaine married E.C. “Stub” Stern and moved to Garrison. Elaine had been married previously and had three children. Stub, a widower, also had three children. Together, Stub and Elaine were married for 48 years and raised their family of six children. In addition to caring for her family, Elaine helped Stub manage their main street bar and grill. She especially liked cooking and arranging banquets.
In her community, Elaine was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, served as a Dickens Village volunteer for the afternoon tea at the United Church of Christ, and was a hospice volunteer with the Garrison Hospital. One of Elaine’s greatest joys was spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Prior to her death, Elaine was living at Edgewood Vista in Bismarck.
Elaine is survived by one brother, Frank Berry, Sacramento, CA, and six children, Susan (Terry) Fugere, Bismarck; Barbara (David) Lee, Bismarck; Jane Hodges, Colorado Springs, CO; Mary Bohnenblust, Fargo; K.C. (Debbie) Burgum, Bismarck; and David (Virginia) Stern, Fargo. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Elaine was preceded in death by her husband, Stub, and one grandson, Cote.
