Darlene was born August 12, 1958, at the Garrison Memorial Hospital, Garrison, ND, the only daughter of Lloyd W. and Clara (Nyberg) Hultberg. She grew up in Coleharbor, ND and attended school there until they closed when she was in the 3rd grade. She traveled from Coleharbor to Underwood daily to attend school until she graduated in 1976.
Following graduation Darlene moved to Grand Forks for a short time and worked as a bookkeeper. She returned home and started working at the Underwood Nursing Home as a CNA. When she left the nursing home she returned to bookkeeping at Ken’s Service which her brother owned in Underwood. Darlene’s daughter, Faye, was born in 1978 and she married Michael Stebbins during this time.
In 1981, Darlene and Faye moved to Bismarck. She started her employment with Charles Hall Youth Services as a bookkeeper on May 11, 1981. She said she would never forget when started because it is also Faye's birthday. She was employed at CHYS until her death and is fondly referred to as the "historian" of the company.
Darlene joined Parents Without Partners when she moved to Bismarck for a couple of years. In 1984 she met Bruce Merkel and this introduced her to a new lifestyle and ABATE. She remained an active member with ABATE for 20 years and could be found places like Menoken Grove working the product line. Following her retirement from ABATE Darlene still made a point to attend certain functions every year especially the Freedom Riders Bike Show so she could tell everyone hi and get her hug.
Family was important to Darlene; she enjoyed going on trips, family get-togethers, school functions, and her thoughts were if her grandkids were there she was there. Darlene enjoyed motorcycle rides, motorcycle events, and dancing. When her body would not let her do these things as well she started finding some enjoyment at the casino.
Darlene is survived by her daughter, Faye (Irvin) Mulfinger; grandbabies, Kyle DeCouteau and Kamie Mulfinger; adopted grandbabies, Missy, Amanda, Tony, Maggie, and AJ Anderson; adopted great-granddaughter, Willow Batta; brother, Lloyd (Brenda) Hultberg; nephews, Joey and William Hultberg; her cat that helped take the stressors of the day away, Oreo; several family members; her motorcycle family; her CHYS family; all the kids calling her ma that Faye brought home; and several close friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather, Clara (Lowell) Anderson; her father, Lloyd Hultberg; her brother, Kenny Hultberg; an infant brother; three infant grandbabies; several aunts, uncles, and cousins; and several close friends.
The family is inviting everyone to go to Sertoma Park Shelter 10 following the memorial to celebrate Darlene's life. She will be joining her brother Kenny and her grandbabies in Coleharbor at a later date.
