Keith was born in 1935 at home on the Keidel homestead in Mandan, ND. He remained a resident and caretaker of this original homestead until his death, August 22, 2016. Keith graduated from Mandan High School where he excelled as an all-around athlete. He pursued and completed a degree in secondary math/chemistry through Bismarck Junior College and Valley City State College (VCSC) (‘58). His roommate at VCSC, John Ostlie, invited Keith to a double date with his sister, Juliann Ostlie, and girlfriend, Joan Ostlie. Both men later married their dates. Julie and Keith wed at Goose River Lutheran Church, Hatton, ND. They then landed their first teaching jobs in Mott, ND. After one year they moved back to Mandan and Keith built a home on the family land. He then used his talents as an educator/administrator for 33 years at Bismarck Public Schools. His longest tenure was as an administrator at Simle Junior High School from 1974 to 1993. Keith received his Masters in School Administration through North Dakota State University. Upon retiring, Keith contributed significantly to his community. He and Julie were charter members of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and attended First Lutheran Church in Mandan while raising their family. Keith served on church council, Morton County Planning/Zoning commission and volunteered in Medora, with Julie. He was most proud of his vital role in bringing city water to rural residents of Morton County. Always a sports enthusiast, he and Richard Hagestuen, officiated countless North Dakota high school basketball and football games for decades…and they had stories to tell. He was self-taught in construction skills and put them to use as an independent contractor with his construction company, Home Improvement. He even built the family a camper for their travels.
Keith owned a personality that was both introspective and outwardly social. He loved people and places more than things. Keith made sure his family was loved, well cared for, rooted in family and well-traveled.
Keith is survived by a large loving family that includes his four children: Kim (Randy) Schott, Overland Park, KS, Craig (Lisa) Keidel, Mandan, ND, Paul (Kelly) Keidel, Bismarck, ND, Jodi (Fiance, Kelly Krebsbach) Keidel, Bottineau, ND; his ten grandchildren, Daniel Reifenberger, Ryan Schott, Stephanie (Danny) Curtis, Andrew (Alisha) Lick, Megan (Dustin) Long, Sergeant Christopher Schott, Amy Lick, MacKenzie Keidel, Ashley Keidel, Bryan Keidel; his sister, Dorothy Griffin; sisters-in-law, Doris (Jack) Babler, Barbara (Duffy) Heinle; brothers-in-law, John Ostlie, Andy (Kathy) Ostlie, James Moxness; and many nieces and nephews.
