Jerry was born May 1, 1949, in Bismarck, ND, the son of Henry and Aneta (Opp) Klein. He was raised and educated in Wing, ND. Jerry stayed on the family farm and married Barbara Johnsen on May 1, 1971, in Bismarck. They later moved to the Black Leg Ranch in McKenzie, ND, where he was ranch foreman. After leaving the Black Leg Ranch, Jerry and Barbara farmed and ranched north of McKenzie. During this time he also served on the Sibley Butte Township Board for many years. In 1989, the couple moved to Bismarck, where Jerry worked for Dakota Tree Moving and Lincoln Oaks Nursery.
In his youth he enjoyed raising 4-H steers, receiving many ribbons. He had a passion for hunting coyotes with his father and uncle and raised many trophy winning greyhound dogs. Jerry enjoyed riding horse, working cattle with his neighbors and friends. When he was no longer able to ride horseback, he put many country miles on his old pickup truck with his faithful companion, “Buster dog,” listening to classic country music.
Jerry treasured his family and the simple pleasures of farm and ranch life. He always found the first spring crocus in the pasture and impatiently awaited the first newborn calf each spring. He listened to the meadowlarks song and rescued many orphaned animals, including a falcon which he trained. His kindness surrounded us, his humor lifted us, and his giving of himself was plentiful.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Barbara Klein; their children, Jerri Lynn Klein (August Feist), Jodine Klein, and Casey Klein; grandchildren, Keanna Klein, Lilly Puhalla, Kaleb Klein, Marri Lazzaro, Steele Lazzaro; his brothers and sister, Darrell (Becky) Klein, Monte (Julie) Klein, Brenda (Jim) Weigel; several nieces and nephews; and his faithful companion, Buster.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Aneta and Henry; and an infant brother, Timmy.
