Gladys Rae Walz, 78, Bismarck, Beloved Child of God, died on August 29, 2016, from multiple system atrophy at the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center. Memorial services will be held at McCabe United Methodist Church, 1030 N 6th St., 10:30 am Thursday September 1, 2016, with Rev. Mark Ehrmantraut officiating. A time of gathering will be held at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, from 5-7 pm Wednesday, August 31, where a prayer service will begin at 7:00 pm. Graveside services are at 1:00 pm Thursday at the ND Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Gladys born on August 5, 1938; she was the youngest of three sisters, Melinda Schmid and Florence Reiser; and her parents Fred and Bertha Giedd, all of Washburn. In 1956 she graduated from Washburn High School and in 1957 graduated from Bismarck Junior College Secretarial School. On August 28, 1960, Gladys and Don were married in the old Washburn Baptist Church She worked: 1957-59 KXMB TV when John F Kennedy visited the CBS station, 1959-64 Harris, Brown & Klemer Geologists 1990's a seasonal employee at North Dakota State Tax Department 1985-2011 was a ND Election Official serving as Inspector, Clerk, & Judge, 1964 to yesterday she was a dedicated mom, wife, neighbor and friend to all who knew Gladys “and a darn good one, too!” She was an active community Servant: 40 yr + McCabe United Methodist Church active member & wedding committee, The Salvation Army: Mobile Canteen Disaster Unit, Thrift Store, Joy Shop at Christmas, SERTOMA's Christmas in the Park, Sons of Norway, The Hunger Garden, The Banquet at Trinity Lutheran Church, Current Events Social Club, ND Petroleum Secretaries, Derrick Club, Century Patriot Band Tour Chaperone, Grimsrud Elementary room mother, 1970-1986 a juror in many local trials Mom loved tending her flower gardens and sometimes dad’s vegetable garden, walking and socializing with her friends, caring for the family pets, baking and cooking wonderful family meals and traveling the whole wide world: 6 continents, 40+ countries & 49 states (sorry WV); she especially loved the ocean. The ND Heritage Center, The Dakota Zoo & our many state and local parks. Her greatest joy was being with family including the adopted family of the Brouwer's; Luko, Barbara, Claudia, Angelika, Uwe, Enno of Ostfriesland Germany. She hosted many family gatherings and always had room for one more at the table. She faithfully decorated her son’s restaurant with hundreds of floral & seasonal center pieces from her garden. She is survived by husband Don Walz; three sons, Randal Walz, Dr. Joel Walz & Dr. Hayley Svedjan Walz, Jeffrey Walz; five grandchildren, Josie, Elliot, Jillian, Oliver, Finn; and many relatives. Memorials may be given to Solar Oven Partners UMC, The Bismarck Salvation Army, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
