Nita was born on May 2, 1932, in Morristown, SD, the daughter of Fred and Iva (Olson) Kanis. She graduated from McIntosh High School in 1950 and attended Business College in Rapid City, SD.
Nita married Lloyd Arndt on October 19, 1952, and they had three children: Cindy, Craig, and Cheryl. She and Lloyd managed grain elevators in several towns in North Dakota and Minnesota. They divorced after 23 years. While working, Nita received her associate’s degree in accounting in 1980. She worked for the Federal government until March of 1997 when she retired.

Collins, CO, Janet of Denver, CO, Mike (Jill) of Bismarck, and Nikki of Bismarck; two great-granddaughters, Eden and Anna of Bismarck; her sister, Joyce of Rapid City, SD; and many nieces and nephews.
