Janet Grace was born to Art and Marilyn Hummel on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1963 in the Elgin Hospital. She grew up on a farm northeast of Mott, ND. She was more comfortable with a wrench in her hand and raising her steer than being in the house. She was very active in drama and sports, lettering in high school basketball and track, and continued to play sports while attending Dickinson State University. The Hummel family singers were well known in their home town of Mott. Janet sang contralto with her sisters and played the french horn and drums in the school band. She graduated from Moorhead State University with a Bachelors degree in business and accounting.
Janet had an impressive business career that provided many opportunities for travel both nationally and abroad. She performed accounting for Richie Bros. and Aerospatiale. She held a senior role as Comptroller for Protection One in Oregon, Texas, and Kansas. In 2001, Janet started Premier Event Management in partnership with her lifelong friend, Marc Di Francisco, of Portland Oregon. She resided in Texas from 1999 to 2014. Janet enjoyed her beautiful Texas home and spending time by the pool. Janet loved cruises and football, and she’d let you know if Thanksgiving dinner would conflict with her beloved Dallas Cowboys football game.
Janet made the decision to move back to Bismarck in 2014 to be closer to family, as her health issues progressed. Her final entrepreneurial endeavor was the development of Dakota Eagle Security. Just this past year, Janet was thrilled to bring home “her baby”, a lively Jack Russell terrier, Eddie.
Family was so important to Janet. She held all her siblings, nieces and nephews very dear to her heart. She remembered them all at Christmas and always had a warm hug to share.
Janet is survived by her parents, Arthur and Marilyn Hummel, Bismarck; her siblings, Lynn (Yvonne) Hummel, West Fargo, Brenda (Cliff) Crawford, Keno, OR, Craig (Kathy) Hummel, Bismarck, Patricia (Ronald) Tangen, Bismarck, Valerie (Larry) Robinson, Dickinson, and Kent (Deanna) Hummel, Bismarck; her eight nieces, three nephews, and 15 great-nieces and great-nephews; Jackie Schmidt, her best friend in TX; and Marc Di Francisco, her lifelong friend and business partner in Portand, OR.
Janet was preceded in death by her grandparents, Ray and Ruth Grove and John Sr. and Carolina Hummel; cousins Jerry Netzer, Judith Mason, and Dennis Hummel; and numerous aunts and uncles.
Memorials may be given in Janet’s name to the Lupus Foundation of America, American Cancer Society, or the Central Dakota Humane Society.
