Edward “Ed” was born November 4, 1924 in Michigan City, Indiana, the youngest of five sons. His parents were John and Helen (Modrzejewska) Sypnieski. He served as an aerial engineer in what was then Burma. He graduated from Indiana University under the GI Bill. He was a proud member of the I Men Alumni, having received a varsity letter in cross country as a freshman. Following graduation he moved to Bismarck and established the North Dakota TB Association. He spent his career in the healthcare industry, retiring as the Head of North Dakota Division of Health Planning.
He was united in marriage to Marian Geohring in 1953. They were blessed with 54 years of togetherness. Marian passed away in 2008 following an extended illness, leaving an emptiness in Ed’s life that couldn’t be filled. He cherished his time with daughter Celeste Erickson, son-in-law Craig and especially his three grandsons, Carter, Collin and Cody. But it wasn’t the same without Marian and he missed her dearly.
Ed enjoyed fishing with Marian and his fishing buddy Stan. He was also a hunter and loved to watch college sports, especially basketball. He never missed a chance to see his beloved Indiana Hoosiers. He built houses in his spare time and his family lived in four different homes in Bismarck, starting a new one after moving into the finished one. Ed was a licensed pilot making his first solo flight in 1960 and used this skill to travel the state for meetings.
Ed was proud of his time in the service and had the privilege to participate in the 2015 Honor Flight with his daughter last year. They had a wonderful time together in Washington, D.C. visiting memorials and spending time with other service members and their families.
Ed was preceded in death by wife, his parents, and four brothers Joseph, Walter, Stanley (Darby) and Vince and niece Pat (Corky) Heeg. In addition to his daughter and her family, he is survived by two nieces, Janet Sypnieski and Marsha (Matt) Fritz of Michigan City, nephew Mark (Mary) also of Michigan City and two great nieces.
In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to North Memorial Hospice, 3500 France Ave N, #101, Robbinsdale, MN 55422.
