Don was born October 14, 1948, in Mandan, ND, the son of Alton and Irene (Rutten) Hermanson. He was raised in McKenzie and graduated from Bismarck High School in 1967. He enlisted in the North Dakota National Guard and was honorably discharged seven years later. He worked for a brief period of time at North Dakota Truck Regulatory in Beach, ND, and this is where he met his future wife, Patty. He married Pat Decker on a very cold November 29, 1975, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Sentinel Butte, ND. He and Pat had three children, Stephanie, Jennifer, and Aaron.
Don was a firefighter for the Bismarck Fire Department prior to an injury in 1983 that ended his firefighting career. Don owned and operated his own painting business for many years prior to his retirement four years ago. It brought Don great joy to volunteer with the Corpus Christi food pantry. Don’s grandchildren were the light of his life and he loved making them their favorites – popcorn, bacon, and pink cookies. He thoroughly enjoyed cooking for small and large crowds.
Don is survived by his wife, Pat, Bismarck; three children, Stephanie (Bill) Macdonald, Jennifer (Jared) Barnhart, and Aaron (Kristin) Hermanson; six grandchildren, Cody, Will, Madeline, Lucas, Marissa, and Lane; and his sister, Sharon (Jess) Karlson and many nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his parents.
