Irene Haag

August 5, 1924 — November 27, 2016

Irene (Kottenbrock) Haag, 92, of Richardton, ND, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday, November 27, 2016, at Marian Manor, Glen Ullin, ND. Funeral services will be held Monday, December 5, at 10:30 am at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, with Pastor Albert Lautenschlager officiating. Burial will be at 12:00 noon at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation is from 4:00 pm – 9:00 pm Sunday, December 4, at Parkway Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a sharing and gathering time will begin at 7:00 pm. Irene was born in Glen Ullin, ND, to Joseph and Christina Kottenbrock on August 5, 1924. The eldest of six children, Irene grew up speaking German and working the farm with her father. Towards the end of WWII, she moved to Minneapolis and worked at an ammunitions factory called Gopher Ordnance Works. At a dance in Richardton, she met the love of her life, Casper Haag, and the two were married on April 26, 1949, in Haymarsh, ND. Irene went from her parents’ home with indoor plumbing, TV, telephone, (and trees!) to a barren, windy, homestead with no trees, an outhouse, a coal burning stove and a cistern for water. Never complaining, she worked side by side with her husband to work the land, hand-milk cows and tend ranch cattle. She and Casper raised nine children providing each with plenty of chores, character-building life experiences, and daily examples of how to live for and follow Jesus Christ. Bible studies and prayer were a foundational part of her life and her family. After her husband and children, Irene’s next love was cooking. She was an expert at preparing meals for large gatherings and looked forward to bringing her family together for holidays and many other family events. We will all miss the long talks around her kitchen table, drinking coffee, eating her caramel rolls and sharing much laughter! Irene is survived by her children, Jim (Eileen) Haag, Knoxville, TN, Char (Skip) Archibald, Helena, MT, Gery (Pally) Haag, Plymouth, MN, Chuck (Becky) Haag, Richmond, TX, Sharon (Russell) Schauer, Regent, ND, Diane (Eric) Schultz, Almont, ND and Mike (Laurie) Haag, Dickinson, ND, along with 22 grandchildren, 51 great grandchildren; her brother, Harold Kottenbrock, Bismarck, ND; her sisters, Adeline Kastner, Redmond, WA, and Vernie Werner, Bismarck, ND; and numerous nieces and nephews. Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Casper, and their two beloved children daughter, Karen, and son, Tracy; and her brother and sister, Alvin Kottenbrock and Lillian Kastner. Irene’s family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to all the wonderful staff of Marion Manor in Glen Ullin, ND, who treated our Mother like their own. (Chyanne, you have a special place in our hearts.)
