Edward was born on January 17, 1926, to Sebastian and Veronica (Schumacher) Dosch at the family farm east of Strasburg ND. Ed attended country school and farmed with his dad until being drafted into the US Army in 1950. He served two years overseas in Germany and France during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1952. Ed returned to farming and in 1954 he married Philomena Privratsky. He also liked shopping for a sale, working on his work bench, restoring Victrola phonographs, watching the Lawrence Welk show, and spending time sitting with Myron.
