Loren was born August 13, 1942, in Morton County, ND, the son of Fred & Ida (Lueneburg) Schwalbe. Loren was the middle child of five children. He was baptized on October 25, 1942, by Rev. C. Muske, and confirmed on July 14, 1957, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Center, by Pastor E. Ketterling.
He grew up on the family farm in Center, North Dakota. Loren played baseball on the Center High School team and was a good left-handed pitcher with a style like Whitey Ford. He continued to play for the local amateur team until he was 27 years old. One of the highlights of his career was pitching in the ND State Amateur tournament.
He worked on the family farm his entire life. In partnership with his brothers, Carl and Rolland, they raised registered Angus cattle, along with some small grain crops. It was known as the North Star Angus Ranch, and they had a reputation for the quality of their cows and bulls.
He married the love of his life, Adeline (Addie) Schmitt, on August 18, 1983. They were married for 33 years when cancer took over his body. Loren and Addie made their church home at Faith Lutheran Church and have been members there for many years.
Loren was a mild-mannered man, and he enjoyed nature; he was a farmer, a cattleman, and a gentleman. Loren could also grill a mean Angus steak. He loved to fish, loved to photograph wild animals, he was easy to speak to, he liked to laugh, and was very kind. He was also a bow hunter and a golfer. Loren, we will miss you!
He is survived by his wife, Addie; his brothers, Carl and Rolland (Brenda) Schwalbe, all of Center; his brother-in-law, Dennis Schmitt, Jamestown; his sister-in-law, Lucinda Malm (Jeff); his sister-in-law, Lynette Terjesen, all of Kulm; and several nieces and nephews.
Loren was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Ida; sister, Lida (Gordon) Wilson; and sister, Lois Schwalbe.
