Mitchell “Mitch” Palaniuk, 83, Bismarck, was called home on January 18, 2017, after a courageous battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 AM at St. George’s Episcopal Church in Bismarck with Rev. Canon Zanne Ness officiating. Burial will be at 1:00 PM at ND Veterans Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 3:00 – 5:00 PM at Eastgate Funeral Service where a prayer service will begin at 5:00 PM. Mitch was born May 22, 1933, in Belfield, ND, to Elko and Mary Palaniuk. Mitch and Karen (Knutson) were married March 19, 1965, and lived in various communities in North Dakota. They moved to Bismarck in 1984 where he worked in the meat department at Dan’s Supermarket. He enjoyed listening to and playing Ukrainian music on his fiddle. He was an avid Twins fan and didn’t miss many NFL football games. Mitch is survived by his wife, Karen; his children Shawnna (Kevin Holt), Michele (Schoenberger), Michael, Laurie (Jeff Peters), and David; one brother, Steven (wife Roberta); one sister-in-law, Marge (Elko Jr.); ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Olga (Krivarchka); two brothers, Bill and Elko Jr.; and one son, Keith. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. George’s Episcopal Church or ND Veteran’s Cemetery, Mandan ND.
