Mary Brendel, 88, Bismarck, died January 23, 2017, at CHI St. Alexius Health, Bismarck. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, January 28, at Church of Corpus Christi, 1919 N 2nd St., Bismarck, with Rev. Paul Becker officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm Friday, January 27, at Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck, where a vigil/rosary service will begin at 7:00 pm. Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bismarck. Mary was born July 1, 1928, in rural Logan County, ND, the daughter of Jacob and Magdalena (Schumacher) Piatz. She grew up in rural Logan County and attended Starky Township School. Mary met Anton Brendel at a church dance and they were married on October 13, 1947. The couple started their married life farming in rural Logan County. In 1951 they moved to the Burnstad area to continue farming. In the spring of 1969, the family moved to Medina and farmed there until retiring in 1982. They later moved to Jamestown and eventually to Bismarck, to care for their son, James. The couple was blessed with 12 children. Mary enjoyed cooking, baking, dancing, sewing, gardening, canning, playing cards, watching basketball, Wheel of Fortune, and word finds. Mary had a very strong catholic faith and prayed the rosary daily. She was a lifetime member of the Catholic Daughters and a devoted member of Church of Corpus Christi. Mary is survived by her seven daughters, Mary (Roger) Volk, Bernie (Ray) Fischer, Marlene (Terry) Martin, Clare Ann, Dianne, Carla (David) Janssen, Shelley (Russ) Trolliey and four sons, Marvin (Karen), Clarence (Julie), Joe (Ann) and Larry (Lila); 22 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Maggie Bernhardt, Julia Horner, Irene Horner, and Rose Horner; her brothers, Willie J. (Tillie) Piatz and Andy (Lorraine) Piatz; brother-in-law, Christ J. Leier; and her sisters-in-law, Barbara Piatz and Christina Hartze. She was preceded in death by her husband, Anton; their son, James; her parents; three brothers, Anton, Mike, and James; and two sisters, Tillie Leier and Carolyn Dinius.
