Ted was born on the family farm located in Morton County near Mandan ND, on February 21, 1929, the son of Joseph G. and Julia (Dietrich) Stein. He was raised on the family farm and attended Crown Butte School No. 7.
Ted farmed with his father until 1951, when he was drafted into the army. He was honored to serve his country as part of the 10th Infantry Division in the Korean War (1951-1953) where he earned the Combat Infantry Badge. He married Gloria Ressler (Mandan) while he was home on furlough, on March 21, 1952. Ted went back into farming northwest of Mandan in 1954 where he farmed until 1964. In 1965 Ted and Gloria moved to Driscoll ND.
Ted did construction work for William Collins Construction and Lunn Construction for a number of years. He was especially proud to have worked on the construction of Interstate 94 through North Dakota. After leaving construction, Ted worked in maintenance for JC Penney, Sears Roebuck, and the State of North Dakota.
Work was the focus of Ted's life, but when not on the job he could be found in his garages working on his various vehicles or in his shop. Ted was particularly proud of his antique 1928 Model 15-30 McCormick Deering tractor which was used in his farming operation northwest of Mandan. He was an accomplished carpenter and did many remodeling jobs in the area. Ted was a self-taught accordion and harmonica player and enjoyed making music often accompanied by his daughter Mary Kaye on the piano. He also enjoyed playing a "friendly game of cards" with friends and family. His home and family were his pride and joy.
Ted is survived by his wife of 64 years, Gloria; his children, Charles (Carla) Stein, Omaha, NE, Mary Kaye (Vince) Hjelle, Bismarck, Mike (Pamela) Stein, Bismarck, Gregg (Cathie) Stein, Elk River, MN, Darryle (Dawn) Stein, Mandan, and stepson, Dennis (Judy) Ressler, Mandan; seven grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; five sisters, Alice Renner, Judy Mauer, Rose (Curt) Jensen, Cecelia (Emil) Hauf, and Lucy (Terry) Hoffman; one brother, Lawrence; and many nieces and nephews.
