We are honored to tell you about our mother, Genevieve Angeline Schmidt Diebel. She was born on September 4, 1934, to Florian and Perpetua (Schmaltz) Schmidt in Killdeer, ND. She was a typical country girl doing chores, making mud pies, and attending country school; uphill both ways. As a young teenager the family relocated to Dickinson where she attended St. Joseph’s and Central High School. She worked several jobs before meeting and marrying Richard Diebel on April 27, 1954. They settled on the south side of Dickinson where they welcomed their four children; CoraLee, Karen, Joni, and Daniel. Gen enjoyed staying home and taking care of her family. She was a skilled crafter; mastering sewing, crocheting, embroidering, quilting, macramé, and ceramics. She also enjoyed gardening, bowling, and being involved with her church and many other organizations. In 1999 they followed their children, moving to Bismarck, ND. There she spent a lot of quality time with her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Gen had many wonderful memories of great friends she made both in Dickinson and Bismarck. She also faced many challenges in the last several years, facing dementia, but was always surrounded by her loving family. She was also comforted by many loving caregivers at Edgewood and St. Vincent’s. We celebrate her life with you and look forward to the day when we meet again. Genevieve is survived by her children, CoraLee (Mark) Buchholz, Bismarck, Karen (Perry) Urbanec, Mandan, Joni (Rick) Keller, Bismarck, and Daniel Diebel, Mandan. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Eric Buchholz, Bismarck, Keshia (Dan) Holzworth, Lincoln, Jamie (Susan) Buchholz, Bismarck, Nathan Buchholz, Bismarck, Jennifer (Justin) Berger, Mandan, Kelly Urbanec, Mandan, Brittany (Jason) Schneider, Bismarck, Kaylee Keller, Lincoln, Aaron Keller, Bismarck, Ashlie Carnes, Harvey, and Cody Carnes, Bismarck; 15 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Betty Stroh, Bismarck, Ann Schulz, Dickinson, and Eleanor Jones, Portland, OR; and one brother, Christ Schmidt, Sherwood, OR. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Richard; her parents; and five brothers, Paul, Tony, Alfred, Leo and Albert. Memorials may be given in Genevieve’s name to any Dementia/Alzheimer’s research organization.
