Dennis Carter, 68, passed away at his home with his wife Mary at his side on March 1, 2017.
A memorial service for Dennis will be held Saturday, March 11, at 2:00 pm at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck.
Dennis was born March 13, 1948, in Jamestown, ND, to Eugene and Edna (Deede) Carter. He graduated from Woodworth High school in 1966, participating in track, cross country and basketball while helping on the family farm. He went to NDSU and then UND where he graduated in 1970 with a degree in Business Education. While at UND he was united in marriage with Mary Ellen May on March 29, 1969. Arlynn, Kelly and Donelle joined the Carter Clan and Dennis enjoyed being a great supporter of their endeavors. As a family, Dennis and Mary made their home in several ND towns over the course of their marriage as they both pursued their advancing careers.
Dennis was a business teacher, drivers education instructor, farmer, basketball coach and elementary principal in towns including New Leipzig, Woodworth, Pingree, Cathay, Robinson, Carrington, Pettibone, Drake and Garrison. He played softball with the Woodworth Farmers Grain team for many years and participated in a National Tournament.
He also enjoyed the outdoors - spending time hunting, fishing and golfing when he could. Dennis’ health led to an early retirement and he and Mary split their time between Carrington, Mandan, and Bullhead City, AZ.
In 2005, after already battling heart disease and diabetes, Dennis was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Prior to his death he also battled dementia and advanced Alzheimer’s. He has now found peace and has gone home to be with his parents and brother.
Survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Mary; son, Arlynn and Jen Carter; son Kelly Carter; and daughter, Donelle and Stephen Alford; grandchildren, Cole Carter and Courtney and Brock Alford. Dennis is also survived by his mother-in-law, Elizabeth May; and in-laws and their families, Irene Carter, Nancy (Jim) Buttke, Barb (Gordon) Besse, Steve Hallingstad, Kathy Koenig, Patti Hrichena and Priscilla May.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Edna Carter; brother, Willard Carter; father-in-law, Lynn May and sister-in-law Carol Hallingstad.
