Betty was born in Oakes, North Dakota on November 14, 1931, the oldest child of Hans Carl and Dagmar (Hoybak) Schnoor. Betty was raised with her two sisters, Carol and Donna in Oakes. She was baptized at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Aberdeen, South Dakota and confirmed at Holy Cross Lutheran in Lidgerwood, North Dakota. Betty graduated from Oakes High School in 1949. She attended State Normal and Industrial College at Ellendale, North Dakota receiving a Standard Normal Teaching Certificate in 1951. Betty was united in marriage to George Haussler on July 2, 1951. They had five sons – Charles, James, David, William and Gerald. Betty returned to college at the University of North Dakota-Ellendale Branch in the late 60’s to receive her Bachelors Degree on May 29th, 1969. Betty taught elementary school (a profession of ‘perfect fit’) for 25 years in Dickey County – 6 years at Monango and 19 years in Ellendale. She retired in May of 1995. Betty was never too busy to teach, care, support, nurture and love with an endless amount of enthusiasm and joy. She was the master teacher, embodying the cardinal virtue of patience in her kind and and forbearing attitude. She not only took care of our daily needs, but also spent a tremendous amount of time simply listening. Betty monitored our behavior and carefully listened to our ideas, accepting and respecting them with either praise or positive correction. Betty stressed courtesy. At times we thought we fooled her; we rarely ever did. She embodied the essence of a great teacher/mother in that she had the commitment and courage to show her love daily. The pride and smile on her face made one feel special. She was a social butterfly who absolutely loved being around people. She hated missing any social event. Her compassion for children and love of her profession left a lasting impression on those who came in contact with her. She is on a lot of former student’s ‘favorite teacher’ list. George and Betty lived in Lidgerwood, North Dakota from 1951 to 1956 where sons, Charles and James, were born. They moved to New Rockford in 1956 and son David was added to the family in 1957. After the death of George’s father, in 1958, the family moved to the Haussler farm near Monango, North Dakota and sons, William and Gerald, were added to the family. The family raised cattle, pigs and other animals on the farm, along with growing small grains. George and Betty moved into Ellendale in 1987. Betty will always be remembered as a kind and gentle person who put a lot of emphasis on family. Betty is a member of Ellendale’s Zion Lutheran Church, Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, American Legion Auxilary, Retired Teachers and the Red Hat Society. Five sons survive her Charles (JoAnn), James (Julie), David (Denise), William, and Gerald (Janie) Haussler. She is also survived by grandchildren Jennifer (Mark) Carline, Jeffery, Andrew, Tessa and Cara Haussler, Jeremy (Heidi) Jonathon (Tonya) and James Sigl, along with seven great-grandchildren.
