Adam Schweitzer, 100, died Saturday, August 17, 2019 at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Thursday, August 22, 2019 at Church of St. Mary, 806 E Broadway Ave, Bismarck, ND.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at Eastgate Funeral Service, 2302 East Divide Avenue, Bismarck, where a Knights of Columbus rosary/vigil service will begin at 7:00 pm.
Burial will be at 3:00 pm CST/2:00 pm MST on Thursday, August 22, at St. Martin Cemetery, South of Dodge.
Adam Schweitzer was born November 1, 1918, on the family farm south of Dodge in Dunn County North Dakota, to Sebastian and Johanna (Vogel) Schweitzer. His elementary education was in a one room schoolhouse and he graduated from Assumption Abbey High School and Assumption Junior College in Richardton, ND. Adam received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from St. John’s University, Collegeville, MN, and Master of Arts Degree in History from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, ND. He was a participant in a Foreign Language Institute at UND and an Advanced German Language Institute at Stanford University, which held an over seas campus at Bad Boll, Germany. He also attended various seminars at Dickinson State University, Minot State University and UND.
Adam started his teaching career as principal and teacher at Taylor Public School, Taylor, ND, in 1945. After three years, he accepted a teaching position at Hazen High School where he remained for six years. In the fall of 1954, he assumed a Latin and German teaching position at Williston High School. He retired from teaching in the spring of 1978.
Adam was a pioneer in high school Driver Education in North Dakota and was instrumental in having the course introduced at Hazen High School and Williston High School. He was certified to teach Driver Education on the college level. During his teaching career, Adam was a member of NDEA and NEA. While employed at Hazen, he served two terms as President of the Mercer Co. School Masters and at Williston, he served as President of WEA. He also served as Chairman of the Driver Education section and Latin section of NDEA.
Adam was a member of the Williston Elks Lodge. He was an Honorary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus Third Degree Council 1604 in Bismarck and a charter Member of The Msgr. J.J. Halloran Assembly of Williston, Fourth Degree. He was an Honorary Life Member of Assembly 0791 in Bismarck. Adam was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bismarck. He volunteered at the ND Heritage Center.
Adam is survived by one sister, Frances Fleckenstein, of Bismarck; two sisters-in-law, Emily Schweitzer of Bismarck, ND, and Ann Schweitzer of White Bear Lake, MN; and many nieces and nephews. Also, friends, Lance and Deb Hill family and Jerry and Audrey Grafsgaard.
Adam was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Jacob, Anton, Peter, Joseph, and John Schweitzer; four sisters, Sister Rose, Sister Francis, Sister DeLora, and Sister Ella and one nephew, Philip Schweitzer.
Memorials may be given to St. Mary's Church or St. Martin's Cemetery.
