Adele Margaret Gorder, 91, of Bismarck passed away peacefully on March 9, 2018 with her family at her side. A memorial service will be held at 12:00 Noon Friday, March 16 at St. Georges Episcopal church, 601 N. Fourth Street, Bismarck, with the Rev. Pat Eustis officiating. Interment will follow at 3:00 in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Family and friends are invited to a celebration of life gathering from 6 to 8 pm Thursday, March 15, at Eastgate Funeral Service, 2302 Divide Ave., Bismarck, where a prayer service will begin at 7:00 pm. Adele was born August 12, 1926, in White Spur, ND to Ernest I. and Georgene M. (Willson) Ferguson. She and her sister, Ivonne Eastman, grew up in Forest River, ND. Upon graduating from Forest River High School in 1944, Adele entered the Deaconess Hospital nursing program in Grand Forks and served as a Cadet Nurse until she graduated as an RN in 1947. A life-long learner, Adele went onto compete her Bachelors of Science at Mary College and her Master of Science in Counseling and Guidance at the University of North Dakota. Throughout her long nursing career, Adele worked in many areas including Head Nurse, Community Health Nurse, Psychiatric Nurse, Clinical Instructor and Assistant Professor. She was active in the American Nurse’s Association, serving on their Council of Specialists in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing, the National League for Nursing, and the North Dakota Board of Nursing where she served as President and on the legislation committee. It was during her first job at Grafton’s Deaconess Hospital that she met her “Prince Charming”, Marine Howard Gorder, at a New Year’s Eve party. They were married May 16, 1948 and settled in Bismarck where their daughter, Bonnie, was born. Adele was a true nurse and an honor to her profession. If a neighborhood child got a scrape or a friend was ill, she was there tending to them. She never stopped caring for people and being a nurse. After “retiring” she worked as a home help nurse until she was 75. A second “retirement” allowed Adele and Howard to split their time between Bismarck and Mesa, AZ., with frequent trips to Seattle, WA to see their daughter, son in-law, and “granddogs”. Wherever Adele lived she had a flower garden -- some said she raised the prettiest roses in town! Her home was always full of love and fresh baked treats. Spare time was enjoyed with neighborhood camping trips and picnics. An avid collector of antiques, she scoured barns and silos finding old furniture to refinish. She and her daughter had years of fun searching for “treasures”. She had great compassion and a love of animals, especially her dogs, horses, and wild life. When her daughter showed horses she and her husband, Howard, never missed a show or 4H event. This often involved late nights and early mornings washing, feeding and grooming animals. Her nursing expertise even extended to giving horses shots and patching up cuts. Adele will be greatly missed by all, especially by her daughter Bonnie Gorder-Hinchey, and son-in-law Michael Hinchey, Seattle, WA; sister, Ivonne Eastman, Grand Forks, ND; nieces, Leslie (Steve) Adams, Port St. Lucie, FL, Ruth (Larry) Ries, West Fargo, ND, Carol Janousek, Mentor, MN; and nephews, Bill (Mary) Mitchell, Thompson, ND, Jon Gorder, Grafton, ND, Tim (Susan) Johnson, Park River, Steve (Laurie) Johnson, Grafton, ND, Paul (Val) Johnson, Faribault, MN, Craig (Virginia) Garland, Bend, OR, Brian Eastman, Johnstown, ND; her faithful dog, Winston, and her “granddogs” Taz and Rev. She will never be forgotten. Adele was preceded in death by her loving husband, Howard Gorder; mother, Georgene (Willson) Ferguson, and father, Ernest Ferguson. Adele was kind, loving, generous and compassionate. She was always there when you needed her to give a helping hand or kind word -- a true healer of body and mind.
