Adeline was born on November 2, 1940, to Balzer and Cecelia (Kramer) Mattern on her family farm in Strasburg, North Dakota. She is the third of ten children. She and her siblings grew up to be very close and their relationships have been a lasting pillar in her life. After high school Adeline went to college to get her bachelor's degree in education from Valley City State College. Mom taught physical education, language arts, and geography at Strasburg Public School from approximately 1965 to 1986. Her students and co-workers were very important to her. She taught several of her siblings and her two children. It was in Strasburg where she met Clarence Schwab and they were married June 20, 1964, at St. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church in Strasburg, N.D. They were blessed with three children: Loren, Peter John, and LuVae. After her retirement from teaching, Adeline started her insurance career working for Combined and AFLAC Insurance. She sold insurance from 1986 until her retirement at age seventy three! Adeline credited her outgoing personality and fluency in German to much of her sales success, she always said "speaking German helped her connect with people from both North and South Dakota." Mom was known for giving family AFLAC ducks! They were a hit for her grandchildren, nieces and nephews and great grandchildren.

This success provided her and her family with many opportunities such as travel, college educations, and life at Mina Lake. She worked with her dear friend, Jeannie Hartman, with AFLAC for twenty-two years. Adeline had a home on Mina Lake in South Dakota for approximately twenty years. Having many friends at the lake, she was always up to activities and some mischief, such as coffee with her friends, boating, jet-skiing, driving her golf cart, as well as her motorcycle. She organized a girl's fishing trip to Lake of the Woods in Minnesota to make a big catch! In 2006 Adeline hosted a family reunion at the lake. There were one hundred and eight family members! It was a memorable event never to be forgotten by all of her siblings and her children. She was very active with annual lake picnics. Adeline will be remembered as the chicken stealer. She moved to Bismarck, N.D. to be closer to her children, daughter-in-law, four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Adeline has always been generous with her blessings. Her faith played a very important role in her life. She was a former member of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Strasburg.

Adeline is survived by her children, LuVae Marie Priess, Bismarck, and Loren Clarence Schwab, along with his wife Julie Schwab (Kramer), Bismarck.
