Alfred Schumacher

Bismarck, formerly of Napoleon

Alfred Schumacher, 97, Bismarck, formerly of Napoleon, passed away September 27, 2024 at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center. Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Thursday, October 3 at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Pkwy, Bismarck. Visitation will be held one hour prior.

Burial will be held at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Alfred was born on January 6, 1927 in Napoleon to Mike S. and Emma Schumacher.

He attended rural school and then worked with his dad on the farm. During the Korean War, he was drafted into the Army in 1951 and stationed at Anchorage, Alaska.

Alfred was joined in marriage to Florence Wentz on June 29, 1952 in Alaska. They moved back to Napoleon in 1953 where he became involved in farming. In 1959, the couple moved to the Schumacher farm northwest of Napoleon. They remained farming until January 1981 when they moved to Napoleon.

In retirement, Alfred was a driver for the Napoleon Care Center for over 10 years.

In 2015, the couple moved to Touchmark in Bismarck.

Alfred was a member of the United Methodist Church in Napoleon, where he served as a board member and usher. He was a member of the Napoleon American Legion and board member on the Farmers Home’s Administration and Sealy Township Board.

Alfred enjoyed many hobbies, including wood carving. He carved log chains for all his children.

During the last years of his life, he enjoyed Sudoku, riding his electric scooter, and listening to polka music. He also enjoyed watching YouTube videos, including farming, police chase, and auction videos.

Alfred’s biggest joy was being with his children and grandchildren.

Alfred is survived by his wife, Florence; sons, Mickey (Tina) Schumacher, Randy (Jennifer) Schumacher, and Ricky (Connie) Schumacher; daughter, Lynnae (Carl) Lightbody; grandchildren, Dawn Balzer, Tanya (Justin) Struckman, Brittani (Ryan) Moser, Corey (Michelle) Schumacher, Justin Schumacher, and Jerrod (Makaelah) Schumacher; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Ann Hellmuth and Viola Kelle.
