Al was born on his parent’s farm near Flasher, ND on February 10, 1926. He went to rural school there until the family moved to Mandan following the Great Depression of the 30’s. He graduated from Mandan High School and entered the US Army in 1944 during World War II. He was an ambulance driver in the Army and served in Germany, France, Philippines and lastly in occupied Japan. When the war ended, he returned home to Mandan. He worked on the Garrison Dam project where he met the love of his life, Lila Peterson. They were married February 5, 1948 in Mandan. Al worked for several engineering companies until he was offered a career at the ND State Transportation Department as a draftsman. He retired after 30 years of service to the State of North Dakota. He moved to Huff, ND on a rural property in 1992. It is there where he took up his true passion of gardening.
