Angela "Angie" Koppang

April 30, 1955 — October 14, 2020

Angela (Angie) Fay Koppang, 65, Bismarck, passed away on October 14, 2020 at her home. A Celebration of Life Service will be livestreamed on Tuesday, November 10, 2020, at 10:30 a.m. (Central Time).

Angie was born on April 30, 1955 to Alton and Frances (Davidson) Koppang in Mayville. She was the oldest of four children. Angie and her family moved to Bismarck in 1964. She graduated from Bismarck High School in 1973. After high school, she pursued a degree in Music Education from Mary College (University of Mary). Angie began her education career in Bismarck as an elementary orchestra teacher and choral director at Simle Middle School. As an officer in the North Dakota American Choral Directors Association, Angie helped create the vision and coordinate the first All State Middle School Honor Choir. She furthered her education at UND receiving a Master’s in Music and a PhD in Educational Leadership. She was the assistant principal at Simle Middle School, after which she moved on to teach in the Educational Leadership Program at UND, and later at the University of South Dakota. Angie served the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI) in the late 1990s as a member of the Board of Trustees.  She then joined the AdvancED organization in 2003 as the State Director of ND.  Angie served in many roles over the years, her formal titles ranged from Director to Vice President, and her reach extended throughout the upper Midwest. Her colleagues were more likely to refer to her as mentor and friend and relied heavily on her exceptional intelligence and her ability to get to the root of problems.  She retired in 2019. Angie’s influence on so many people throughout her educational career will leave a lasting legacy. Angie has left the world a much better place because of her untiring devotion to education.

Angie loved travel and adventure and enjoyed sharing that passion with her family. Especially when she treated her sisters to celebrate her 60th birthday in New York City and her many niece and nephew trips to Disneyland and Disney World.  She spent one summer travelling Europe and later a trip to Norway with her mom and grandpa.  Family was extremely important to Angie. She always made sure to spend special time with her nieces and nephews, making and decorating holiday cookies, hosting celebrations, and attending their activities. She would host an annual lefse making party at her home to make sure the family had plenty of lefse for the holidays. Angie liked to create memories for everyone she encountered and used her cross-stitch talents to make special Christmas stockings for the family.

Angie will be deeply missed by all her family and friends as she left us too soon and suddenly.

Angie is survived by her sisters Lorraine (Ken) Weber, Kathy (Mark) Baerlocher; her sister-in-law Doreen Koppang; her nieces and nephews Wendy (Arik), Jessica, Melissa, CJ (Andrea), Cory (Angie), Joel (Pam), Lucas, Courtney (Chris), Alyssa, Amanda, Norah; and many great nieces and nephews.

Angie was preceded in death by her mother, Fran Koppang; her father, Alton Koppang; and her brother, Chris Koppang.

In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Angie’s love for education and music, memorials may be designated to Bismarck Public Schools Foundation (BPSF), Central Dakota Children’s Choir or ADK Sorority Scholarship Fund. Memorials and sympathy cards may also be sent to the Koppang Family, 5132 Driftwood Ln, Bismarck, ND 58503.
