Ann Patricia Carns

November 23, 1927 — March 12, 2024

Bismarck, formerly of Williston

Ann Patricia Carns was peacefully called to eternal rest on March 12, 2024. Ann was born November 23, 1927 in Williston, ND to William and Mary Ellen Redman. Ann grew up in Williston, ND and lived there for 78 years before moving to Bismarck, ND

Ann was a proud 1947 graduate of Williston High School and a graduate of Minot State Teachers College. She taught at the Brown School, a one-room school house and then at St. Joseph Catholic School. Ann was recruited to work for the JC Penney company as a merchandiser and department manager. This 38-year career, gave Ann the opportunity to  travel to Denver, Minneapolis and Detroit in search of the latest fashion.

Ann married the love of her life, William Carns on October 22, 1949. Ann and Bill enjoyed traveling to the west coast and Canada to visit family, camping in their elaborate RVs, and spending time with their three granddaughters.

Ann was the mother of five children: Linda Jane, William Redman, and Kathy Jean, as well as two infant sons who died at birth.  Ann wrote, “her siblings were her friends and her children were her life. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her inspiration to succeed each day. God bless them all.”

To Ann, Mother’s Day and was every day. Especially with her 9 great-grandchildren. She had a secret ottoman filled with toys, a lazy-susan filled with Play-Doh, and special snacks for each great-grandkid. Her family loved every moment with Great-grandma Ann!

Ann lived a life in service to others. From her family to the community, Ann was driven by her deep dedication to the Catholic faith. She knew that praying the Rosary, would provide direction for her.

When Bill Jr. was unexpectedly injured in early adulthood and her husband’s health declined, it was Ann who was by their side every day, caring for them.

Ann was an avid volunteer and lifetime member of Catholic Daughters of America. Ann was frequently found donating her time at the church, school, blood bank, and numerous community organizations. In fact, Ann was honored with the volunteer of the year award in Williston, ND to commemorate her for her service.

Up to the day she passed away, her independence to navigate around Bismarck as well as her ability to recall dates, times, and events was witnessed by many. Ann lived the life that life brings. Ann was sweet, yet spicey. When she gave advice or offered a compliment, it came from the heart. Her candid demeanor never left us wondering - which is why we loved her so much.

Ann is survived by her daughter Linda (Ken A.) Knodel; son, William Carns; daughter, Kathy Carns; three granddaughters, Colonel Dr. Kristen (Colonel Clay) Nichols, Dr. Kendra (Jarred) Roloff, Katie (Dr. Andrew) Kummer; and nine great-grandchildren.

She is now in her heavenly home and reunited with her parents, sisters, brother, two infant children and her very much missed husband of 45 years, Bill.

A prayer and vigil service is scheduled for 4 PM CDT Thursday March 21, 2024 at Parkway Funeral Service, Bismarck. Rosary and Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 AM CDT Friday, March 22, 2024 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Williston.
