Arleen was born in Braddock on September 15, 1941, to Edward and Magdalena (Vetter) Moch. She was raised on a farm south of Braddock and attended Braddock Public School graduating in 1960. After graduating she moved to Bismarck and worked at the State Capital with the Department of Public Instruction. She returned to Braddock where she married Del Svalen on June 20, 1964, at St. Katherine’s Catholic Church in Braddock. Arleen started working for Hazelton Public School as receptionist and then was employed with the Bank of Hazelton until 1968. She then became a stay at home mom where her and Del raised four children, two boys and two girls. When all children were old enough to attend school, she started working at Braddock Implement. In 1986 she started a job in Kintyre, ND, at Wolf’s Farm Equipment. Arleen thoroughly enjoyed her job, there wasn’t a part number she didn’t know. She built many long- lasting relationships with customers and dearly loved her co-workers. She retired from Wolf’s Farm Equipment after 29 years of employment due to health reasons.
Arleen was a member of St. Katherine’s Alter Society, South Central Threshing Association, Braddock Park Board and Braddock Community Involvement.
Arleen bravely battled breast cancer on four separate occasions. Never complaining about the numerous doctor appointments, surgeries and treatments. She wore her pink ribbon pins proudly. Some of her favorite activities included spending time at the cabin, fishing, her flower garden and cooking for family and friends. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
