Born Arnold Alfred Schieve in Douglas, ND, on January 15, 1926, to Fred and Natalie Schieve, he was raised on a farm near Douglas, where he attended school through eighth grade. From 1945 to 1947 he worked as a machinist in Chicago before returning to North Dakota to work at Northwest Bell Telephone for 34 years. Arnold met Edith Lembcke at a dance in the Douglas area and were married Aug. 21, 1950; they spent the next two years moving around the country during Arnold’s service in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. They then moved to Bismarck in 1952.
In 1971 Arnold and Edith purchased a farm six miles east of Bismarck, where they enjoyed a life focused on farming and ranching, sharing good times with family and friends, and dancing…everywhere they went. In his long full life Arnold traveled the country with Edith, wintering in south Texas in their later years. He loved to take his family camping and fishing, for a while holding a state fishing record. He and his children several times were featured on the front page of the Bismarck Tribune holding large northern pike.
Well into their 80s Edie and Arnie stood out on the dance floor, consistently drawing praise from much younger dancers who would often stop and watch them. Arnold was proud to say he cared for Edith after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s right up until she passed away in November 2016. They had been married for 66 years.
Arnold is survived by sons Dean (Mary) Schieve, Lakeville, MN, and Kevin (Beth) Schieve, Menoken; daughter, Doreen (Don) Sorch, Wilton; grandchildren Shane Schieve, Debbie Davis, Alan Schieve, Curt Schieve, Heather Schieve, Zac Schieve, Matt Schieve, Ambre Wald, Travis Sorch, Luke Schieve and Hanna Schieve; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters Mrytle Beaudoin, Lavona Getzlaff and Geraldine Strandberg; sisters-in-law Lucille Schieve, Shirley Schieve and Delores Schieve; and many nieces and nephews who remember him with great affection.
Arnold was preceded in death by wife Edith, sons Arvin Schieve and Darvin Schieve; brothers Paul, Gerhardt, Ervin and Alfred; sisters LaVerne and Laura.
