Betty Jane Schmidt born January 11, 1939, in Enderlin North Dakota. She grew up on the family farm near Sheldon North Dakota attending grade school in a one-room Anselm school house in rural Ransom County. She went to Lisbon High School where she graduated in 1956. She moved to Bismarck in 1958 and began her career in an office on the 12th floor of the State Capital Building. This is where she met her future husband, Wallace Owen. They were married in 1959 at Trinity Lutheran in Enderlin, ND. Together they had three children Mason, Kelley, and Jill. They lived in Bismarck on West Turnpike Avenue for 58 years!
She supported her children's activities while they were growing up especially hockey. Betty was one of the original "Hockey Moms” playing in Bismarck's first " Moms" game during the Hockey Days Event in 1971. Betty was a lifelong member of Good Shepard Lutheran Church. She was an avid bowler for many decades at Midway Lanes. She retired in 2000 as the Executive Secretary to the Adjunct General, North Dakota National Guard. She served as an Original Board Member for the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery and volunteered with the Bismarck Emergency Food Pantry.
Betty enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and working in her garden and yard. In fall of 2020 Betty moved to Hayward, WI to live with her daughter Jill. She enjoyed wildlife watching, deck sitting happy hours, coffee excursions and many adventurous drives through the countryside. Her care and concern for others was her trademark, always putting others comfort and happiness ahead of her own. She will be greatly missed by all of us.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Joy and Audrey Schmidt; brother, Maynard; and husband Wallace.
She was survived by her children Jill, Kelley (Anne), Mason (Peggy); grandson, Chase (Katie) and great-grandchildren, Brandt and Kennedy.
Love You Mom!
