Cleo Mae (Bailey) Chapman Mantz, 87, Bismarck, passed away the morning of November 3, 2018. Services will be held at 3:00 pm Sunday, November 11, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 1109 N 26th St., Bismarck, with Pastor Charles O’Hare officiating. Burial will be held at the McClusky Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Cleo Mae (Bailey) Chapman Mantz, age 87 of Bismarck, ND, passed away in her sleep on the morning of November 3, 2018 at the Baptist Health Care Center. She was born to her missionary parents the late C. Clyde and Thelma (Beane) Bailey in Shanghai, China on July 5th, 1931. She was the oldest of three children all born during mission service in China. Mae began her formal schooling at the John Nevins Andrews Elementary school once her family returned from China in 1938 and settled in Takoma Park, MD. Mae moved to California with her father and step mother Ethel and graduated from Glendale Adventist Academy, Glendale, CA in the spring of 1950. Just before her senior year of high school Mae married her first husband David Elton Chapman on August 18, 1949 in Glendale, CA. In January 1951 their first child was born followed by 4 others between 1951 and 1963. When her children were young, Mae worked as an in home daycare provider, foster mother and a nurses aide. Later, in 1969 Mae completed her Licensed Practical Nursing certification. She spent the rest of her working years as a nurse mostly at Washington Adventist Hospital but also in other nursing positions. After retiring in 1994 Mae and her husband moved to Chesapeake, VA. After David’s death in 2001 Mae moved with her son and his family to start her new life in North Dakota. In 2007 Mae met Robert Mantz and they married on February 15, 2008 in Bismarck, ND. They moved into the Baptist Health Care Center together in October of 2011. Robert passed away in August of 2012. Mae enjoyed living in the Baptist Home. She was very active in all of the activities especially enjoying all of the music programs and Bible study. She was a member of the Bismarck Seventh-day Adventist church. Mae is survived by her son David (Margaret) Chapman, Jr. of Bismarck, ND, daughters Louise (John) Klaver of Salisbury, NC and Elizabeth (Scott) Hanson of Rolla, ND, stepchildren Linda (Dean) McIlroy of Bismarck, ND, Joyce (Wendall) Nichols of Acworth, GA, and Jeff Mantz of Yankton, SD; as well as 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter; half brothers, George (Wanda) Bailey of Rocklin, CA, Donald Bailey of Rancho Mirage, CA, and Chuck (Kathy) Bailey Puyallup, WA and half sister Anita (Ron) Rau of Grants Pass, OR; as well as some nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by both of her husbands, David and Robert, her daughters, Katherine Ressalam and Esther Chapman, her grandsons, Kenneth Ressalam and Ethan Hanson as well as her parents, stepfather Julian Kidwilder, stepmother Ethel Bailey, brother William Bailey and sister Annette Durst. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Dakota Adventist Academy, 15905 Sheyenne Cir, Bismarck, ND 58503.
