Daniel Mitzel

Daniel Joseph Mitzel, 75, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2024 at Sanford Hospital, Bismarck ND, with his family at his side.

Cremation has taken place with no services, as per Daniel’s wishes.

He will be buried at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery at 1:00PM, May 10, 2024. 

Daniel was born May 29, 1948, to Agatha (Weigel) and Daniel J. Mitzel. He was raised in Napoleon, ND, and moved to Bismarck at age six. He was the youngest of fourchildren. His sisters reside in Bismarck: Dinah Brynjolfson (Morris), Patty Faurie (Daniel), and Bernie Jordan (Fred).

Dan graduated from St. Mary’s Central High School in 1966 and attended Bismarck Junior College. He served in the US Navy for four years, with an honorable discharge. He worked for the Highway Patrol in the Wahpeton area for over 30 years. He married Pat Tessmer and they had two sons, James and David (West Fargo).

Dan married Mary Kay Gustin in 2002 in Lincoln, NE. He acquired four more children: Jeremy, Sam, Susie Kahler (Brad), and Paul Reis.

Dan enjoyed fishing, history, bowling, softball, and deer hunting. He was known for his vivid stories and sense of humor. He and Mary Kay had 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Dan was a kind and loving man. He will be greatly missed by all his family and close friends.
