Chief David R. Paetz, 70, Bismarck, formerly of Beulah, passed away with his loving wife, Sophie, by his side on Sept. 30, at CHI St. Alexius, Bismarck. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at New Life Church, 1320 Tacoma Ave, Bismarck. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
David was born on May 30, 1950 to Lawrence and Barbara (Mitzel) Paetz in Parshall. He grew up on the family farm in Parshall where his love for the outdoors, cattle and horses blossomed. These same things he passed on to his three children, grandchildren and honorary “neighborhood kids.” He was an old soul that loved to learn the history of the pioneer way. Becoming an avid hunter and fisherman, he enjoyed making his own wood arrows and even a traditional long bow. Teaching traditional archery to the kids was a favorite of his.
He graduated from Bismarck Police Academy in 1975. He worked with the Devil’s Lake Department for three years. The highlight of his time spent in Devil’s Lake was when he was awarded a Live Saving’s Award after pulling a man from a burning car on New Year’s Eve. In 1979, he joined the Beulah PD and worked his way up from Patrolman and Sargent. In 1983, he attended K9 School where he became a handler during Beulah’s boom. K9 Officer, Echo the German Shepherd, joined the family. He was especially proud of these years and to keep the community safe in various ways. He was promoted to Chief until his retirement in January 1999 after 25 years. Some highlights of his career include, starting Cops and Kids Fishing in Knife River, working with officer friendly at the school and visiting with the senior citizens of the community. During these years, he gained respect that is still mentioned today. He always said police were underrated and just like the military – kept the community safe. He had many accomplishments and cherished his time in law enforcement. The name “Chief” stayed with him until the end.
After retirement, God called him to work with the Salvation Army on the Standing Rock Reservation. He helped the youth with various minister and outreach programs. He loved and respected the Native American culture having grown up on the Fort Berthold Reservation. During these years, he was honored and gifted a star quilt from the Elders.
David was an active member of New Life Church in Beulah. He enjoyed working among Pastor Drew Becker, with Crew the church youth group, which his children were involved. Ministry was a passion for David.
David is survived by his wife of 39 years, Sophie; three children, Heather (Brandon), Zachary (Kayleen) and Rebecca; grandchildren, Jonathan (Sam), Skyler (Kelsey), Hunter, Caleb, Tabitha, Adeline; great-grandchild, Kole; brothers, Mike (Carla), Glenn and Ron (Laura); and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, Jonathan David; twin brother, Robert; sister, Karen; and his parents.
