Dorothy M. Smith

October 6, 1935 — December 8, 2017

Dorothy Marie Smith, 82, Bismarck, passed away peacefully at St. Alexius Hospital, December 8, 2017 surrounded by family after a short battle of cancer.  Services will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, December 12th at Faith Lutheran Church, 1402 E Ave C, Bismarck.  Interment will take place at a later date in Scandia, KS.  Visitation will begin at 10 am Tuesday at the church until the time of the service. Dorothy was born October 6, 1935, to Floyd and Edna (Farlee) Johnson in Rydal KS.  She was the second of 13 children.  She graduated from Scandia High School in 1954 and married the love of her life and best friend, Jack Larry Smith, on November 27, 1955.   They had three children, Vicki, Steven, and Nancy.   Dorothy and Jack made their family homes in Kansas and Iowa before moving to Riverdale ND in 1969.  In 1973 Jack was transferred to Bismarck where Dorothy worked for McCarney Ford and later for Basin Electric, retiring in 1992. Dorothy enjoyed sports from watching the Jayhawks, Twins, Red Sox, Bison, Wizards, Larks and her favorite softball team, AmVets, that Steve and grandsons played for.  She kept the book for the AmVets team for many years and she did not like giving any of them an error.   Over the years, she loved to get out and golf, embroider and knit, and read all the books she could get her hands on.   Some of her best memories included the many years she and Jack traveled south for the winter, settling for years in Mission TX and later in Pensacola FL, visiting family and friends along the way. She especially enjoyed attending her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s church, school and sporting events.  Attending church at Faith Lutheran was an essential part of her life as well.  She will be forever missed by her husband, Jack, her children, Vicki (Dennis) Kunz, Steven (Selina), Bismarck, and Nancy (Michael) McHaley, Pensacola FL; eight grandchildren, Tyanne (Seth) Ryan, Rogers MN, Garrett (Jill) Kunz, Jack Smith, David (Nicole) Smith, Michael Smith, all Bismarck, Joshua McHaley,  Steven (Elizabeth) McHaley, and Ryan McHaley, all Pensacola FL; and eight great-grandchildren, Avery, Finley and Kai Kunz, Porter and Hadley Ryan, Jack Owen Smith, Claire and Hannah Smith; and sisters Donna Huffman, Iuka MS, Delores (Leslie) Cady, Ponca City OK, and Rose Hobson, Manchester MO, and brothers Gary (Denise) Johnson, Lawrence KS, and Robert (Janet) Johnson, Victoria TX; sisters-in-law Katie Johnson, Midfield TX and Shirley Johnson, Courtland KS; brother-in-law Gene (Bonnie) Smith, Scandia KS and many favorite nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Glenna Fields, Betty Stromberg, Janet Rae (infant), Marilyn Blecha, Debbie Curry; brothers Raymond and Larry; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jack and Eva Smith; brothers-in-law Melvin Huffman, George Stromberg, Louis (Millie) Smith and Harold (Pauline) Smith and special nieces and nephews. A celebration of her life will be held this summer in her hometown, Scandia, KS.  In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to organizations that fight cancer or to the charity of your choice.
