Douglas “Bowie” J. Bowers, 72, Bismarck, died May 16, 2019.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, May 21, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck.

Family will be greeting visitors one hour prior to the service at Parkway Funeral Service.

Private family burial will be held at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Fargo, ND.

Doug was born March 10, 1947, in Fargo, ND, the son of James and Margaret (Bergstrom) Bowers. He was educated in Fargo where he graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1965. He went on to receive his Bachelor of Science degree from NDSU, where he was involved with the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He earned his masters in hospital administration from Concordia College. Doug worked for the American Hospital Association in Bismarck and traveled with the company until the mid-70s.  

He, along with some friends, opened the Front Page Bar in Bismarck in 1979. In the mid-80s Doug sold the bar and went to work for KFYR in radio sales until his retirement. Doug was a volunteer for the McQuade Softball Tournament, a tournament board member of the Bismarck Softball Association, a lifetime member of the Elks Club, very involved in the NDSU Team Makers, and Goofy’s Tailgate Crew. Doug was a huge NDSU Bison fan and rarely missed a Bison football game. For all you Bison fans, wear your Bison gear to the service! He also enjoyed playing cards with friends at the Elbow Room.

Doug will be deeply missed by his four siblings, Barb Olson (Don), Moorhead, MN, Peter Bilstad (Sandy), Fargo, Mary Vigen (the late David), Fargo, and Margy Nelson (Rick), West Fargo; several nieces, nephews, and special friends; his goddaughter, Kelsey (Ledger) Wagner, Boise, ID; and godsons, Corey Huson, Victoria, MN, and Paul Bilstad, Fargo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, David Vigen; niece, Laura Nelson McShane; and brother, Paul Bilstad.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Association or a charity of the donor’s choice.
