Edward Huck was the first child born to Harry and Celestina (Schaffer) Huck on June 25, 1927 in the home of a Glen Ullin ND midwife. He was a proud lifetime resident of North Dakota with most of it spent on his farm in rural Hannover where he was educated at a nearby one room country school. He married Monica Heiser on October 13, 1952 and lived two years with his parents while they started their family with the birth of a son, Donald. He then worked construction for two years on Garrison Dam while living in Pick City and Big Ben with the addition of their son, Jerome. Ed then managed Hammel Ranch in Dunn Center for five years in the mid 1950’s while adding two sons, Michael and Anthony, then one daughter, Delores, to their growing family. In 1960 Ed and Monica bought his parent’s family farm where they would settle to raise their family after the birth of their final child, Annette. Due to Ed’s health problems his sons Don and Mike both tried their hands at running the farm before an auction sale to sell the farm equipment was held in 1979. Ed and Monica continued to live on the farmstead while renting out the land. Ed worked as a Night Guard/Janitor at the Golden West Shopping Center, Head Maintenance Man at New Salem High School and Milk Truck Driver for Kautzman Trucking out of New Salem. Ed and Monica sold the family farm in 1985 and bought a house in Bismarck while he continued to drive truck until 1989. He then accepted a part time janitor position for three years before retiring. On September 28, 2007, Ed lost his beloved wife Monica of almost 56 years. Shortly after her death he moved in with his daughter Annette and family until December 2012, then moved to “The Terrace” Basic Care facility in Bismarck and recently to Miller Pointe. Ed was a lifetime member of Knights of Columbus serving as a Director and Third-Degree Knight, he joined St. Anthony’s Varian when he was in his 20’s where he served as Treasurer, he was on the Church Council for St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Center, served several years as a director on the rural school board, and won the award from both FHA and Oliver County Soil Conservation for “Farmer of the Year”. He especially enjoyed time spent taking care of his farm animals with a special fondness for horses. His machinery and farmstead were something he took great pride in as he was raised with a love for farming and ranching. Ed was taught to always honor “The Lord’s Day” and passed the same Christian Ethics along to his family. He enjoyed playing cards such as Whist, Rummy, Smear and listening to as well as dancing to polkas and waltzes.
