Edwin Gimbel

April 15, 1928 — June 23, 2019

Edwin Gimbel, 91, gained his wings on June 23, 2019 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Funeral services will be held at 11 am Saturday, June 29, 2019 at St. Johns Lutheran Church, Tappen.

Ed was born on April 15, 1928 in rural Hazelton to John and Margaret Gimbel. He farmed with his parents and 12 siblings until graduation, when he joined the Army and served under the 7th Signal Battalion during the Korean War in France. Upon his return stateside, he began training in Telegraph school and worked as a wire chief for the Northern Pacific and Burlington Northern Railroads in the communications department between Fargo, ND and Glendive, MT. He retired from Burlington Northern Railroad in 1991.

Edwin married Ione Taplin on June 6, 1957. They raised two children, Monte and Pam, while living in Steele, ND and Glendive, MT. For many years they dreamed of owning a place on Lake Isabel, and purchased a lot on the Northwest side in the early 1960 's. They longed for summer days of water skiing and spending time on the lake with family and friends.

Once Ed retired, he built his dream home on Lake Isabel where he taught his grandson’s how to water ski. Ed also taught his grandsons how to golf and they spent many summers at the golf course in Steele. Great-grandchildren Madison and Jaxon loved driving Grand-dad's boat!

Ed also passed on his love of sports to his children and grandchildren. They spent many hours at football, baseball, and basketball games, often traveling across the U.S. for the love of the game. Ed and the family traveled to Minneapolis, Cleveland, and San Francisco to chase after football. He was a permanent spectator/supporter of the Class B basketball games and loved supporting the local high school teams for many decades.

Monte and his dad were able to experience the Honor Flight to Washington D.C.

Ed is survived by his son Monte (Kathy) of Hudson Oaks, TX. Their children Kyle (Cassandra), Pittsburgh, PA; Tyler (Christina), Fort Worth, TX; son-in-law John Hagenstein, Minot, ND; grandson Abram Hagenstein, Bismarck, ND; 3 great-grandchildren, Madison, Jaxon, and Averie Gimbel; brothers Henry and Dick; sister Ednarose Kopp, and sister-in-law Joyce Hansen.

Ed was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Ione; daughter Pam; parents John and Margaret Gimbel; brothers Harry, LeRoy, and George; sisters baby Alice, Ester Paulson, Alma Opp, Annetha Schmitt, Delores Yost, and Irene Salhus.

Ed will spend eternity dancing in Heaven with Ione.
