Eleanor L. Piehl, 98, Bismarck, went to live with her Lord and Savior on January 4th, 2023, at Edgewood Village.
A funeral service will be held 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, Jan. 10, at McCabe United Methodist Church, 1030 N 6th St., Bismarck.
Visitation will be held 5-7:00 P.M., Monday, Jan. 9, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck. A prayer service will begin at 7 p.m.
Burial will be held 1:00 P.M., Jan. 10, at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Eleanor was born, Feb. 7, 1924, in Marion, ND, to Joseph and Edna (Wendling) Korn. She was the eldest of four sisters and raised on the family farm near Marion. She attended Marion High School and continued her education at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, ID, receiving her teaching certificate and continued her education at Valley City State University years later. She taught school in Chaffee, ND. Eleanor was united in marriage to Howard J. Piehl on Nov. 9, 1946. They made their home on a farm near Marion and were blessed with five children. The family moved to Valley City in 1963 and then to Bismarck in 1971.
Eleanor had a passion for teaching, directing church choirs, Sunday School and plays, leading Girl and Boy Scout troops, Bible studies, mentoring young students and volunteering for various organizations. She was a member of McCabe United Methodist Church, UMC Women and P.E.O. Chapter AX.
Eleanor was artistic. She completed oil paintings that are cherished by family and friends. Her other hobbies included quilting, cross-stich, bird watching, and gardening. Her home was a warm and welcoming safe place. She hosted many holidays, birthdays, celebrations, and get togethers. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren enjoyed playing board games and cards with her, Kings In The Corner being their favorite. Every Christmas the family looked forward to making her famous iced sugar cookies. She was so patient regardless of how many sprinkles ended up on the floor.
Eleanor and Howard had 70 years together. After Howard passed in 2017 she moved into Edgewood Village. There she made many friends with residents and staff and continued her involvement in activities she enjoyed, always bringing a smile and positive attitude. She lived a full and joyful life.
Eleanor is survived by her children, JoAnn Piehl, Hillsboro, OR, Linda (Chuck) Wolski, Bismarck, Wendy (Tim) Peterson, Velva, George (Peggy) Piehl, Hebron; grandchildren, Darin (Stacy) Owens, Thomas (Stephanie) Owens, Andrea (Chris) Snortland, Nick (Kara) Wolski, London (Jay Jerger) Wolski, Terry (Ashley) Peterson, Marijo (Chris Kemp) Peterson, Sarah (Aaron) Christiansen, Alex (Patricia) Piehl, Matt (Sylvia) Piehl, and Cody Piehl; 20 great-grandchildren; sister, Leah Vislisel, Hillsboro, OR; sister-in-law, Patricia Piehl, Valley City; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard; son, Captain Joel Howard Piehl; and sisters, Marillyn Ketterling and Eileen Smith.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, 1825 46 St. Mandan, ND 58554.
